Write now prompt – Message waiting

The phone flashed “Message Waiting”, but she wasn’t sure she could stand to listen to it now. She knew who it was going to be from. Adam… again. He’d been trying to get hold of her all morning but she just couldn’t deal with talking to him at the moment.

Since the break up last month, Sue wanted to distance herself from him. She felt terrible that she didn’t feel the same way he did anymore, but there wasn’t much she could do about it. Feelings are uncontrollable, right? Staring at her phone, Sue stood playing with the tip of her long red hair contemplating what she should do. “Why hasn’t Adam got the message yet? What could be so important that he has to get hold of her?”. After the long day in work Sue had just had, the last thing she needed was Adam on the phone begging for her to come back. Her boss had told her off this morning for being late, she spilt coffee down her favourite pale pink pencil skirt and she had been stuck in traffic on the motorway for the last hour on her way home due to somebody falling off the bridge not far from her house. All she wanted to do now was have a relaxing bath and put her feet up.

Walking away from the receiver, Sue headed upstairs and ran herself a hot, deep bath using her Body Shop ‘White Musk’ bubble bath. Following her bath she felt much more relaxed after her disastrous day and decided to listen to the message. Grabbing the phone she dialled 2 to listen.

“Sue, I can’t live like this anymore. I’m in love with you. I was praying you would at least return my calls but it just feels like you’re avoiding me.” He was sobbing. It sounded as if he was out as she could hear the sound of traffic humming in the background. “Oh Sue, I’m so sorry. I really am. I love you darling, forever. Goodbye”. The phone went dead. The phone fell out of Sue’s hand onto the floor with a thud, and Sue followed, feeling weak and loosing control of her whole body.

“NOOOOOOOOOO” she screamed falling to the floor in despair. He was gone.. and it was because of her.
